When you think of Fiji's coastlines, mangroves might come to mind. Among the various species, the Red, Black, and White Mangroves are especially significant. Here's a bit more about each, in a nutshell:
Appearance: Those arching 'prop roots' are a dead giveaway.
Location: Right at the waterfront, they're the coast's first line of defence.
Role: Besides holding the shoreline firm, they're a sanctuary for baby fish and crustaceans. A real marine nursery!
Appearance: Spot those pencil-thin 'pneumatophores' sticking out of the mud? That's them!
Location: A bit behind the Red Mangroves, they like their space a tad less salty.
